Industrial automation original equipment manufacturers often are faced with conflicting requirements: they need fast, guaranteed response times from software that’s controlling high speed machinery while at the same time they need to have general purpose database and network connectivity with legacy application support. The typical solution to this problem – use two or more cpu boards, one dedicated to real-time, another dedicated to general purpose use – is expensive, lowers reliability, increases power consumption, and requires additional cooling.
